Project overview

Pamoja EcoGreen Bamboo Reforestry sits on 1,840 hectares of degraded smallholder land in Busia County, western Kenya, ten kilometres from the Uganda border. The site was selected from a 2024 community survey across four sub-counties — Matayos, Nambale, Butula, and Funyula — where farmer cooperatives identified soil exhaustion and seasonal flooding as the constraints most limiting yield on their cassava and maize plots. Native and naturalised bamboo species (Oxytenanthera abyssinica, Bambusa vulgaris, and a controlled stand of Dendrocalamus giganteus) were chosen for their three-year-to-maturity profile, water-table reinforcement on the Sio River floodplain, and the household-scale culm harvest that begins in project Year 4.

The project pairs reforestation with a contracted offtake for processed bamboo culms — flooring, construction-grade poles, and biochar feedstock for the sister Wamunyu kiln site. Year-10 modelling at site-specific stratum density returns 58,420 tCO₂e verified to date against a baseline established under VM0047 v1.1. Monitoring is on a 5-year rotation per the methodology, with field-agent plot capture every quarter for the first three vintages.

Validation under Verra VCS is in progress with SCS Global Services. The validator opened the desk review on 2026-02-14 and the project sits at 84/100 readiness on the platform — the remaining work covers a third-party biomass audit on Stratum B and a community-consent re-affirmation cycle in two of the four sub-counties. Every plot photo, DBH measurement, and community-engagement record is hashed and anchored to Hedera Consensus Service topic 0.0.4421772; the audit trail has accumulated 1,284 events since project registration. Credits are available at $19 per tonne and clear directly through the platform buyer portal.
